Decorative glass

Over time a lot of different techniques have been applied by artisans to add decorations to a basic glass form. This page gives an overview of these decorative techniques.
Glass is an amorphous (non-crystalline) solid material that exhibits a glass transition, which is the reversible transition in amorphous materials (or in amorphous regions within semicrystalline materials) from a hard and relatively brittle state into a molten or rubber-like state. Glasses are typically brittle and can be optically transparent. The most familiar type of glass is soda-lime glass, which is composed of about 75% silicon dioxide  sodium oxide  from soda ash, lime, and several minor additives. The term glass is often used to refer only to this specific use.

Silicate glass generally has the property of being transparent. Because of this, it has a great many applications. One of its primary uses is as a building material, traditionally as small panes set into window openings in walls, but in the 20th-century often as the major cladding material of many large buildings. Because glass can be formed or moulded into any shape, and also because it is a sterile product, it has been traditionally used for vessels: bowls, vases, bottles, jars and glasses. In its most solid forms it has also been used for paperweights, marbles, and beads. Glass is both reflective and refractive of light, and these qualities can be enhanced by cutting and polishing in order to make optical lenses, prisms and fine glassware. Glass can be coloured by the addition of metallic salts, and can also be painted. These qualities have led to the extensive use of glass in the manufacturing of art objects and in particular, stained glass windows. Although brittle, glass is extremely durable, and many examples of glass fragments exist from early glass-making cultures.

In science, however, the term glass is defined in a broader sense, encompassing every solid that possesses a non-crystalline (i.e. amorphous) structure and exhibits a glass transition when heated towards the liquid state. These sorts of glasses can be made of quite different kinds of materials: metallic alloys, ionic melts, aqueous solutions, molecular liquids, and polymers. For many applications (bottles, eyewear) polymer glasses (acrylic glass, polycarbonate, polyethylene terephthalate) are a lighter alternative to traditional silica glasses.

Decorative Glass

Decorative Glass
Surface coatings can be applied to glass to modify its appearance and give it many of the advanced characteristics and functions available in today's flat glass products, such as low maintenance, special reflection/transmission/absorption properties, scratch resistance, corrosion resistance, etc.

Coatings are usually applied by controlled exposure of the glass surface to vapours, which bind to the glass forming a permanent coating. The coating process can be applied while the glass is still in the float line with the glass still warm, producing what is known as "hard-coated" glass.

Alternatively, in the "off-line" or "vacuum" coating process, the vapour is applied to the cold glass surface in a vacuum vessel.

Coated glasses can be toughened, laminated or incorporated into an insulating glass unit.

Security Glass
Glass that is designed to resist physical attack, ballistic and bomb blasts. These products are specialist laminates that use multiple layers of glass and rigid interlayers depending on the resistance required.

Screen Printed Glass
Uses ceramic paint that is screen printed and permanently fused to the toughened glass surface.

Mirrored Glass
To produce mirrored glass, a metal coating is applied to one side of the glass. The coating is generally made of silver, aluminium, gold or chrome. For simple mirrored glass, a fully reflective metal coating is applied and then sealed with a protective layer. It can also include a vinyl backing for safety.

To produce "one-way" mirrors, a much thinner metal coating is used, with no additional sealing or otherwise opaque layer.

Mirrored glass is gaining a more prominent place in architecture, for important functional reasons as well as for the aesthetic effect.

Decorative Glass NYC

Decorative glass is normally used when there is a possibility of human impact or where the glass could fall if shattered. Skylight glazing and automobile windshields typically use laminated glass. In geographical areas requiring hurricane-resistant construction, laminated glass is often used in exterior storefronts, curtain walls and windows. The PVB interlayer also gives the glass a much higher sound insulation rating, due to the damping effect, and also blocks 99% of incoming UV radiation.
A typical laminated makeup would be 2.5 mm glass / 0.38 mm interlayer / 2.5 mm glass. This gives a final product that would be referred to as 5.38 laminated glass.
Multiple laminates and thicker glass increases the strength. Bullet-resistant glass is usually constructed using polycarbonate, thermoplastic, and layers of laminated glass. A similar glass is often used in airliners on the front windows, often three sheets of 6 mm toughened glass with thick PVB between them.
Toughened glass is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Tempering, by design, creates balanced internal stresses which causes the glass sheet, when broken, to crumble into small granular chunks of similar size and shape instead of splintering into random, jagged shards. The granular chunks are less likely to cause injury.
Laminated glass is a misnomer. It is usually layers of toughened glass and plastic. Laminated glass holds together when shattered because, in the event of breaking, it is held in place by an interlayer, typically of polyvinyl butyral (PVB), between its two or more layers of glass which crumble into small pieces. The interlayer keeps the layers of glass bonded even when broken, and its toughening prevents the glass from breaking up into large sharp pieces. This produces a characteristic "spider web" cracking pattern when the impact is not enough to completely pierce the glass.
In 2014, researchers used lasers to create an analogue of nacre by engraving networks of wavy 3D "micro-cracks" in glass microscope slides. When the slides were subjected to an impact, the micro-cracks absorbed and dispersed the energy, keeping the glass from shattering. Altogether, treated glass was reportedly 200 times tougher than untreated glass.

Decorative Glass at last your dream has come true and now you have a new frameless glass shower door. You can’t but admire the new look of your bathroom at the moment, but it’s already the high time to start thinking of washing it correctly. The matter is that in several months, you can see some mineral build up and soap scum on the surface of your recently new door. But try to cope with the problem a bit earlier when this coating isn’t thick yet, as it can be harder to clean.
Unfortunately, even after making your frameless glass shower door clean it may turn out to be too difficult to maintain further, particularly if it’s a high traffic bathroom. This means that your bathroom is used very often. Nevertheless, don’t get upset, as there’re several steps for you to take in order to minimize the time spent on the process of cleaning your shower door, so that you’ll keep it attractive and clean for many years to come.

If worst comes to worst, you can use other options for your frameless glass shower doors. One of the options concerns the usage of special glass from which your shower door can be produced and which significantly helps to clean the door quicker and easier. In addition, there’re also certain protective coatings which can greatly lessen the time spent on cleaning the door.

But most of frameless glass shower doors is produced from standard glass that had a porous structure and in the course of time can be easily damaged or just covered by hard water, soap scum, and even humidity. In order to avoid more serious problems, it’s highly recommended to provide your shower glass door with proper care on everyday basis. Taking care of your shower door for just a minute a day will prevent you from spending a great amount of time on thorough cleaning of your shower glass.

The second advantage of cleaning your frameless glass shower door every day will protect it from potential damaging your shower doors with the permanent character. Spending only one minute a day and cleaning your glass with a shower door glass cleaner and wiping it down with a soft clean cloth is everything you’ll need to do to keep your shower door new and fresh for many years.

Fortunately, the contemporary market offers a great variety of different effective shower door glass cleaners that can bring a brand new look to your shower door. Some experts in this field recommend to use a squeegee in order to "squee gee" the water off the glass after each procedure of taking the shower, but in reality even just a soft cloth can do this work in a perfect way. But if you have noticed that your shower door has a thick layer of coating on t, it’s better to purchase a bottle of high-rate shower door glass cleaner.

If you want always to see your shower door glass new and shiny, keep it ventilated in order to get rid of too much moisture. Everybody knows that there’s much moisture in any bathroom or shower room, but few people completely realize that it can cause unnecessary dirt and grime to stick to the glass that makes it too difficult to remove. As a result, everything you can see on the shower door glass is it’s grimy and foggy look. If you don’t wish to see such a picture even in your nightmare, try to do your best to spray your glass door, wipe it with a soft dry cloth, and ventilate it every day. And enjoy your shiny shower door glass for many years.

Because of the porous character of glass, it’s sometimes advised to use a protective coating that works perfectly in preventing the necessity to maintain your glass door every day. The greater number of protective sealants is directly coated onto the glass itself, while others need to be located onto the glass at the factory. And still there’re those sealants, like ShowerGuard, which aren't even a coating or sealant in their nature, but they serve as a sealant. Special coatings and glass can reduce the time necessary for cleaning your shower door glass, but still you have to maintain it from time to time. Wipe the door quickly after having the shower and occasionally clean it with special products and your door will please you long.

Finally, if you’ve got a frameless glass shower door and you are experiencing difficulties with keeping it clean, undoubtedly, you can follow some steps given higher. At least one cleaning method is expected to fit you and prove to be effective in your situation. But if you haven’t washed your frameless shower door glass for a long time, and it has got some hard-to-clean coating, consider using some of the best sealants available in the modern market. You can also decide on using such an alternative as the protective coating or even ShowerGuard shower door glass. And never lose your courage, no matter how dirty your shower door glass is there’re always many ways to bring a new beautiful look to it! Good luck!

How_to_install_frameless_shower_door

#Cheap #Shower #Door #How_to_install_frameless_shower_door Installing a “simple” frameless glass
shower In a simple installation that looks like this: … there are four things you will want to really study before you start. 1) The size of the glass – Depending on the size of your shower your glass panel will weigh between 60-120 pounds. It’s easy to underestimate the manpower that it takes to hold a pane of the size in place while fitting, cutting, or bolting it to the wall. Solution: Call a friend or two to help with the heavy lifting. 2) Get square – Double-check before making any cuts that your opening, fittings, step-up notch or other glass panels are level and plumb. You’ll want to know this info before you cut away at a $500 sheet of glass. 3) Measure, measure, measure – Measuring is the most important skill in this whole project, so don’t rush through it. There is little room for error when cutting expensive pieces of glass. Be sure to follow the standards of professional glass installers. 4) Cutting and drilling – At some point you are going to have to cut, drill, center, glue or set the glass so that it’s in a stationary position. This may be obvious, but it’s easy to shatter the glass if done incorrectly. Be sure to take your time and follow the advice of the pros. This isn’t a time for innovating new approaches.
